Volunteer & Learn: Immigrant Rights and Resources

In recent months, there has been a rise in visible interactions between law enforcement and immigrant communities across the U.S. Please join us for our September Volunteer and Learn session in partnership with COPAL MN (Communities Organizing Latine Power and Action).

We will learn together about the rights you have as a bystander if you witness ICE interacting with your neighbors, as well as your rights if ICE is targeting you or your loved ones. We will also talk about the difference between public and private space, and different types of warrants.

To protect your privacy, we will not be recording attendance and we are not requiring you to sign up with your full name or email address. This will be a virtual webinar session hosted on Zoom and cameras will not be required. The link will be emailed the week of the event - mark your calendars! If you have any questions, please email homeowner@tchabitat.org.

**Note: Our presenters are not lawyers and will not be giving legal advice. This training is intended to increase awareness of your rights and how you can support other individuals in your community.

Date: Tuesday, September 16, 2025
Time: 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Location: virtual only/via Zoom

Monthly Maintenance

Safe and Healthy Homes

  • Everybody wants a home that’s considered safe and healthy, but what does that mean? According to the National Center for Healthy Housing, a safe and healthy home is “dry, clean, ventilated, free of pests and contaminants, well maintained, and thermally comfortable.” Use these principles to help guide your home maintenance strategy if you’re looking for a place to start.

Fall Deep Clean

  • As the weather gets cooler, we’re all going to be spending more time indoors, so why not get your interior spaces ready for you? Consider a fall deep clean to reset your home for winter and make a clean and cozy place for you and your family.

Secure Chemical Cleaners and Medication

  • You may not think about your chemical cleaners or your medications that often, but they could be toxic to small children or pets. Make sure your cleaners and medications are in a place that’s either locked or out of reach to prevent any unnecessary and tragic accidents. If you think your child has ingested chemicals or medications, call the Minnesota Regional Poison Center at 800-222-1222. For pets, call the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at 888-426-4435.

Check Locks on all Doors and Windows

  • To ensure the security of your home, it’s good to periodically check your windows and doors to make sure they close and lock properly. Check locking mechanisms to see if they’ve loosened over time and check latches to make sure they’re aligned properly.

Remove Fall Risks

  • Fall risks are all around us outside our normal field of vision, but shouldn’t be ignored as a safety hazard. Make sure clutter is picked up off the floor to avoid stepping on something that could slip out from underneath you. Secure transitions from one flooring style to another—i.e., from carpet to vinyl flooring—with transition strips. Proper lighting will also go a long way to preventing falls.

Mold Mitigation

  • Mold mitigation is all about managing how much moisture is in the air. Check your bath and kitchen fans to make sure they’re functioning properly and then be sure to run them while those spaces are in use. Open windows when you can to generate positive airflow. When running the air conditioning in the summer and heat in the winter you may want to consider running a dehumidifier to draw out excess moisture.

Fire Extinguisher

  • Fire extinguishers can mean all the difference between an easily contained fire and a much more dangerous blaze. Make sure you have a fire extinguisher that (a) is in a location that’s easy to find—usually in the kitchen, often under the sink and (b) hasn’t expired yet

September is National Life Insurance Awareness Month and a great time to consider the plans in place to protect your family in the event of your death. Purchasing a life insurance plan demonstrates a commitment to protecting your family’s financial wellbeing. Navigating the life insurance market can be confusing. You might already have some coverage from your employer, but it may not be enough to cover all your family’s expenses if something happens. Learn more about life insurance.

Life insurance complements an estate plan such as a trust, will, or transfer upon death deed. If you want to learn more, consider attending the upcoming Are Wills Enough? webinar hosted by PRG on Tuesday, September 16, at 10:30 a.m.
